Contact Joan at jmartin@hrwc.org or (734) 769-5123, ext.600.Spend the day outdoors helping to collect the aquatic bugs that scientists use to gauge the quality of the water and the health of stream habitat. Learn why there are so many kinds of bugs in one stream and not in another. HRWC and the local communities use the information to make wise decisions concerning the future of the Huron River.
Collecting aquatic bugs is a fun, social, and educational experience. Very few people know that an entire community of creatures lives beneath the water’s surface. These small animals create teeny fishing nets, homes out of sand, plants and silk, and are able to thrive while evading fast flowing water and hungry fish.
Each volunteer or group is assigned to a team with a group leader who shows the team what to do and an experienced bug collector who handles the stream work. You do not need to enter the stream. No previous experience is necessary and children are welcome if each one is accompanied by an adult. Free but registration closes on September 15th. Register at www.hrwc.org/volunteer/roundup/
