The Board of Commissioners declared October 2009 as National Cyber Security Awareness Month at their Ways and Means on October 7, 2009.  National Cyber Security Awareness Month is designed to increase the public's awareness of cyber security and crime issues, so that citizens can take precautions to avoid those threats on the Internet.   More information about the national campaign can be found at this link: http://www.staysafeonline.org/ncsam.

Woman Using a ComputerDr. Peter Fonash, National Director of Cyber Security, will be speaking at both events.  "Too many families and businesses are being affected by internet crime in our community.  Children are leaving their homes with strangers they met online and government computers are being hacked.  We are pleased to have our National Director of Cyber Security come to Washtenaw County to share his knowledge with us.  Just as we lock our doors at night to keep our family safe, we also need to secure our computers." said Commissioner Kristin Judge.

"With all of the advantages technology has given us we also have to be prepared for its dangers. Everyday more of us make purchases online, pay our bills through e-banking and our kids are growing up in a world where the norm is posting your everyday actions for the world and strangers to read. Staying Safe on the Internet is not just a catchy slogan; it's a necessity in an advancing world", said Derrick Jackson, Director of Community Engagement for the Washtenaw County Sheriff.
