10th Annual ENPACT Public Forum
TENTH (2009) ANNUAL ENHANCEMENT OF POLICE AND
COMMUNITY TRUST (ENPACT) PUBLIC FORUM
Wednesday, October 21, 2009
Noon - 2:30 p.m.
Learning Resource Center
County Service Center
4135 Washtenaw Ave.
There still remains a widespread and
strongly held perception by many people
that racial profiling continues to be
regularly practiced by some law enforcement officers within our county and
especially at the road patrol level. So, in order to continue to confront the reality of that perception, or fact, we are again having our annual public forum to enable the residents of our county to have the
opportunity to communicate directly with all of our law enforcement chiefs.
Invitations are extended again also to all of our top governmental and civic
leaders within our county to include all law enforcement unoon officers as well.
This is the Tenth Annual "Enhancement of Police and Community Trust" (ENPACT) Public Forum, held as part of our Washtenaw County Bar Associations\' Annual Bias Awareness Week, held during the third full week of October.
As has been past practice, all members who have comprised our ENPACT Coalition over the years continue to co-sponsor and support this important annual public forum. The ENPACT Coalition is comprised of:
- Ann Arbor & Ypsilanti-Willow Run Branches of the NAACP
- Black Employees Association of Washtenaw County Government (BEAWCG)
- Citizens for Justice
- Huron Valley Association of Black Social Workers),
- ACLU of Michigan,
- ACLU of Washtenaw County
- Washtenaw County Bar Association’s Criminal Law Section
- all in collaboration with the WCCJA (Washtenaw County Criminal Justice Association) and the Union Presidents of the various law enforcement agencies throughout our county.
The theme centers on having "A Safe, Secure and Just Community" with County Prosecutor Brian L. Mackie joining me again as the hosts. Lloyd Powell, Public Defender, will serve as the moderator as has been done for the past 9 years. Pizza, fresh veggies, cookies and beverages will be provided the same as last year by Prosecutor Brian Mackie and we will be prepared to accommodate approximately 75 - 100 attendees from the public- at- large.
With a few new arrivals, the panelists are expected to again be County Prosecutor Brian Lee Mackie, County Sheriff Jerry Clayton, our local Michigan State Police Post Director, Wynonna Sturdivant, Ann Arbor Police Chief Barnett Jones, Ypsilanti Acting Police Chief Paul Deridder, Pittsfield Township Director of Public Safety Matthew Harshberger, Saline Police Chief Paul Bunten, University of Michigan Director of Public Safety Ken Magee, Eastern Michigan University Police Chief and Executive Director of Public Safety Greg O'Dell, Milan Police Chief Jeffrey Lewis, Chelsea Police Chief Ed Toth and Northfield Township Acting Police Chief Tim Greene. Sheriff Jerry Clayton has accepted our invitation to be our guest speaker. Other Law Enforcement Chiefs will be introduced by the moderator and may make a few remarks if they wish at that time or, in deference to limited time for all of us, wait until later to dialogue with the public audience in attendance to response to any specific questions that they may have.
In addition to following the agenda below, we hope to get more of the Union Presidents to attend so we may dialogue with them also as a part of our overall audience participation. In the early years more union officers would show up but have not done so in recent years.
Remember to reserve Wednesday, October 21, 2009 on your calendar to again attend this important event where a delicious free lunch will also be provided by Washtenaw County\'s Chief law Enforcement Officer, County Prosecutor Brian Lee Mackie.
