2009: County Officials Take Their Oaths

Honorable David Swartz, Washtenaw County Circuit Court Chief JudgeIt was a week of new beginnings for Washtenaw County-wide elected officials.

Newly elected District Court Judge Charles Pope and re-elected Richard Conlin were sworn in for new terms on the 14B and 14A District Court bench.  Re-elected Circuit Court Chief Judge David Swartz and Chief Judge Pro Tem Donald Shelton took their oaths and were invested this week, and Judge Swartz administered the oaths in two separate ceremonies for remaining County-wide offices.

On Tuesday, January 6th, a packed courtroom at the Washtenaw County Courthouse was the stage for oaths taken by re-elected Washtenaw County Treasurer, Catherine McClary; Clerk/Register of Deeds Larry Kestenbaum, and Prosecuting Attorney Brian Mackie.  The oath of office was also taken by the re-elected – but now with a new title – Janis Bobrin, as Commissioner of Water Resources.

Recent changes in state law have changed the name of “Drain Commissioner” to “Water Resources Commissioner”, better reflecting the Washtenaw County Sheriff Jerry Claytonmission and role of that Office.

Many of those attending the Tuesday ceremony were there to witness the oath taken by the newly elected Sheriff of Washtenaw County, Jerry Clayton.  Sheriff Clayton, along with his fellow officials, spoke to the gathering of gratitude and the challenges ahead for Washtenaw County.

On Wednesday evening, January 7th, the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners held its Organizational meeting, with all eleven taking their oaths of office administered by Judge Swartz.  The meeting was called to order by Clerk/Register Kestenbaum and, after the proceedings, was closed by the newly elected Chair of the Board of Commissioners, Rolland Sizemore.
