SALARY RANGE:$35,007.06 - $55,968.40
LOCATION:2201 Hogback Rd.
Under the supervision of a higher classified employee, is responsible for all activities relating to the safe and secure operation of the jail. This includes all inmate activities from intake to release and various duties not directly related to inmate affairs.
Basic Security:

  • Cell checks: Makes checks to count inmates, checks on inmates' condition, and reports damage to any jail property.
  • Searches: Performs thorough searches of all areas open to inmates to look for weapons, contraband, and damage. Also, searches are conducted on the inmates' clothing and bodies to find concealed articles.
  • Contraband Control: Includes inspecting inmate mail, searches of visitors to the jail, cell searches and proper use of the metal detector.
  • Supervision of Inmates: Supervises, regulates, and manages inmate behavior by frequent and appropriate interaction with inmates in support of an overall inmate behavior management program.

  • Intake Process: Responsible for the paperwork involved in the intake process; assess inmate risks and needs; responsible for the proper maintenance of inmate property; must supervise intake showers and perform strip searches; is responsible for obtaining photographs and fingerprints of inmates; and assists Sergeant with telephone calls.
  • Release Process: Responsible for inmate property returned to inmate; responsible for all paperwork attendant to the release procedure; and responsible for the proper method relative to releasing inmates on bond or personal recognizance.
Inmate Transportation:

  • Courts: Responsible for the safe transportation of inmates to and from various county courts. Assists Bailiff in maintaining the inmates while in court. Assists Bailiff in maintaining court security.
  • Prisons and Other Locations: Responsible for the safe transportation of inmates to the various state prisons, hospitals, job interviews, and other locations as specified by the shift Sergeant.
Medical and Food Facilities:

  • Medical: Responsible for placing inmate names on the doctor's list so that they may be seen by the doctor; responsible for administering first aid in times of need and must pass medication in the nurse's absence.
  • Food Service: Responsible for providing the cook with an accurate number of inmates in a living unit; must supervise the feeding process, and must count and account for eating utensils entering the living area.

  • Responsible for processing visitors into the visiting area. This includes an identification check and a search with a metal detector. Visiting is closely monitored by Corrections Officers with visual checks. Corrections Officers are also responsible for escorting the inmate to the visiting area and performing strip searches after the visit.
Inmate Mail:

  • Responsible for inspecting inmate mail for contraband and for distributing the mail to the inmate population.
Electronic Monitoring:

  • Responsible for the proper working of the electronic control panel which operates all doors, lights, communications system, and the fire detection system in each living area.
Working conditions:

  • This position is a seven (7) day per week, twenty-four (24) hour per day operation. Work schedules will include nights, weekends, holidays, and unanticipated overtime. This position involves contact with people harboring potential communicable diseases. May be assigned to any Department Division (Corrections, Police Services, Support Services, or Administration) or any specialized unit, as needed for the overall good of the organization and its efficient and effective operation.

Physical Requirements:

  • The Corrections Officer position requires reaching, sitting, talking, walking, hearing, seeing, standing, kneeling, crawling, and handling large amounts of weight.
The following hiring standards for Michigan Local Corrections Officers adopted by the Michigan Sheriff's Coordinating and Training Council (MSCTC) must be met:

  • At least eighteen (18) years of age
  • Valid Michigan operator's license
  • United States Citizenship
  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • Successful completion of an oral interview conducted by the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office
  • No prior felony convictions
  • Successful completion of the Local Corrections Officer Physical Ability Test (LCOPAT) as required by the Michigan Sheriffs' Coordinating and Training Council. Test scores are valid for one (1) year.
  • Completion of a pre-employment written test conducted by the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office with a minimum score of 75%.
  • Must be able to pass drug test screening for the use of illegal controlled substances
Residency Requirement:

  • Employees are not required to live in Washtenaw County but must reside within fifty (50) miles of Station One - 2201 Hogback Road, Ann Arbor.
