Kennel Licenses

A kennel is defined as an establishment where 3 or more dogs are confined and kept for sale, boarding, breeding or training purposes, for remuneration. The fees are set forth in the Dog Law of 1919 as amended. Those who want to apply for a kennel license will first need to contact the animal control officer in the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department at 734-971-8400. The animal control officer will inspect your proposed kennel site and issue an inspection certificate.

Upon completion of the inspection by the animal control officer, the person applying for the license should bring the kennel inspection certificate and local zoning approval for the kennel to our office. The Treasurer's Office will verify that there are no local ordinances prohibiting kennels for the proposed location and will then issue the license according to the following fee schedule:

*The fee for Kennel Licenses renewed after June 1st are doubled.

Kennel Licenses are good for the year for which they are issued. Kennel license renewals will follow the same procedure as new kennels. Any licenses not renewed before June 1st are considered delinquent. Kennel licenses are only available at the County Treasurer's Office for all of Washtenaw County.
