Job Description:

Under general supervision and according to established procedures and department regulations, Deputy Sheriffs are responsible for protecting life and property through enforcement of laws and ordinances in a specific geographic area.  Frequently involves the performance of hazardous and strenuous tasks and the exercise of initiative and judgement in various situations endangering life or property. Persons in this position will be responsible for:

Work Environment:

The Sheriff's Office is a seven (7) day per week, twenty-four (24) hour per day operation. Work schedules will include nights, weekends, holidays and unanticipated overtime.  Deputies are required to work a flexible work schedule.

Required Skills & Abilities:

Physical Requirements:

The Deputy Sheriff position requires reaching, sitting, talking, walking, hearing, seeing, standing, kneeling, crawling, and handling large amounts of weight.

Working Conditions:

Exposure to outside elements; contact with people harboring potentially communicable diseases; unpleasant crime scenes.

Do I have to work as a Corrections Officer prior to becoming a Deputy Sheriff?

No.  The Washtenenaw County Sheriff's Office does not require a new hire to work as a Corrections Officer prior to becoming a Deputy Sheriff.  The minimum qualifications for the positions of Corrections Officer and Deputy Sheriff differ.  In addition, each position has it's own field training program.

Do I  have to complete a State of Michigan Police Academy prior to applying for the position of Deputy Sheriff?

If you are currently attending a State of Michigan Police Academy as a pre-service candidate, you are eligible to apply.
