Job Summary:

Under the supervision of a higher classified employee, the incumbent performs a wide variety of duties with the objectives of facilitating the general operation of the Sheriff's Office.  The tasks performed range from routine maintenance to responding to non-emergency requests for service.  Incumbent must be able to exercise independent judgment in performing duties and demonstrate proficiency in processing information and maintaining confidential records and correspondence.  May work any variety of shifts within a twenty four (24) hour period.  

Essential Duties:

• Performs detailed, varied and responsible office support work, which may require the exercise of independent judgement and the application of knowledge related to the department to which assigned
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships wtih those contacted in the course of the work, including the public, other agencies and County staff
• Accepts and process forms, verifies for completeness, may accept payments and provide an appropriate receipt
• Organizes and maintains various files; locates information as required for the work of the department; tracks the issuance of official documents; may purge files and/or prepare information for long-term storage
• Researches and assembles information from a variety of sources for the completion of forms or the preparation of reports; may make arithimetic, statistical or payroll calculations
• Enters and retrieves data and prepares reports using an on-line or personal computer system; may operate and maintain data base or other automated files and systems. Maintains confidentiality of data processed.
• Types correspondence, reports, forms and specialized documents from drafts, notes, dictated tapes or brief instructions using a typewriter or word processor; may compose standard correspondence independently and have the ability to understand and follow moderately complex oral and written instruction
• Enters data into a computer with sufficient speed and accuracy to perform the work assigned to that position
• Duties necessary to facilitate the general operation of the Department and provide support for other employees
• Assignments to other units, sections or divisions within the Department as needed for the overall good of the organization and its efficient operation
• Performs other support activities and duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or GED Equivalency
• Successful completion of the MCOLES pre-enrollment written test scoring in the "A" or "B" band (scores are valid indefinitely)
• Valid Michigan Vehicle Operator's license
• No felony convictions 

Residency Requirement:

Employees are not required to live in Washtenaw County but must reside within fifty (50) miles of Station One - 2201 Hogback Road, Ann Arbor. 

Selection and Employment Standards for the position of Community Service Officer:

Category: Good Moral Character
Standard: Possess good moral character as determined by a favorable comprehensive background investigation covering school and employment records, home environment, and personal traits and integrity.  Consideration will be given to all law violations, including traffic and law conviction, as indicating a lack of good moral character.  This includes arrest and expunged convictions.

Category: Driving History
Standard: Possess favorable comprehensive driving history. 
Disqualifiers: A total of 7 or more points on driving record within two years; Conviction of OUIL or impaired vehicle operation within five years; Two or more convictions of reckless/careless driving within two years; Loss of driving privilege through suspension or revocation of license due to an unsatisfactory driving record as defined by the Michigan Secretary of State operator's license point system within the last five years.

Category: Physical Health
Standard: Be free from any physical defects, chronic diseases, organic diseases, organic or functional conditions which may tend to impair the efficient performance of a community service officer's duties or which might endanger the lives of others or the community service officers.
Additional: Each case shall be investigated to determine its extent and effect on job performance.

Category: Mental / Emotional Health
Standard: Be free from mental or emotional instabilities which may tend to impair the efficient performance of a community service officer's duties or which might endanger the lives of others or the community service officer.
Additional: Each case shall be investigated to determine its extent and effect on job performance.

Category: Physical Integrity
Standard: Be free from any impediment of the senses, physically sound and in possession of extremities.
Additional: Each case shall be investigated to determine its extent and effect on job performance.

Category: Vision
Standard: Possess 20/20 corrected vision in each eye.  And, possess normal visual functions in each eye, including peripheral vision, depth perception, etc.
Additional: Each case shall be investigated to determine its extent and effect on job performance.

Category: Hearing
Standard: Pure tone air conduction sensitivity thresholds for each ear, as shown on the pure tone audiogram, shall not exceed a hearing level of 20 decibels at any of the following frequencies: 500, 1000, 2000, 3000 and 4000 Hertz.  Testing shall be performed by an audiologist at a hearing clinic accredited by the Professional Services Board of the American Speech-Language-Heraing Association or by an audiologist who has a Certificate of Clinical Competence.

Category: Fingerprinting
Standard: Applicant will be fingerprinted with a search of state and federal fingerprint files to disclose criminal record.
Additional: This includes expunged convictions.

Category: Medical examination
Standard: Medical examination is conducted by a licensed physician to determine that the applicant meets medical standards.  The medical examination is completed following the issue of the conditional offer of employment.

Category: Drug Testing
Standard: Applicant will be tested for the illicit use of controlled substances. 


Physical Demands:

Duties require sufficient mobility to work in a normal office setting and use standard office equipment including a computer, vision to read printed materials and hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person or over the telephone. Employees must be physically and mentally fit to perform all the required duties of the classification. These requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodations.

Work Environment:

The Sheriff's Office is a seven (7) day per week, twenty-four (24) hour per day operation. Work schedules will include nights, weekends, holidays and unanticipated overtime.  Community Service Officers are required to work a flexible work schedule.

Work Experience:

General clerical or office support experience required. Experience working in a criminal justice setting and working with the public preferred.

Salary Range:

$29,853.70 -- $40,110.61 annually

Highest entry-level salary of $32,709.87 annually for candidates with two years of full-time continuous law enforcement work experience, or a bachelors degree or higher, or four years of active duty military experience
