WCSO Community Education Series Session 4 - Registration Open!

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office would like to announce the fourth installment of our commuity education series. This session will be presented in partnership with Friends of Restorative Justice and Community Mental Health. It will focus on the Seattle LEAD (Law Enforcement Assisted Diversion) program and the TJC (The Jail to Community) reentry program in Maryland and their potential application here in Washtenaw County.

Sheriff’s Police Service Dogs “Re-Certify” with High Scores

On Sunday, November 6th, 2016, Sheriff’s Office Police Service Dogs “re-certified” as patrol dogs under the auspices of the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA), Region 19. The USPCA is the largest, oldest and most recognized police dog certifying authority in North America. Typically the dogs certify annually under the USPCA as patrol, tracking and detection dogs, and every two (2) years under the National Association of Professional Canine Handlers for the same disciplines. The dogs also compete for civilian obedience and other titles.

Sometime around 6:15 a.m. on August 10th, 2016 a family of swans in the area of Parker Rd. and Scio Church Rd. were run over. Deputies were called to the area by numerous concerned citizens. Upon arrival, deputies discovered that 4 juvenile swans and one adult swan had been run over and killed.

WCSO shares SEMCOG’s regional update reference the increase in traffic crashes, fatalities and injuries with some tips on how to avoid crashes and reduce injuries.

Preliminary analysis by Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) shows that traffic crashes in the seven-county region (Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw, and Wayne Counties) have increased for the fourth consecutive year. Total traffic crashes increased by six percent in 2016, up from 138,710 crashes in 2015. Both traffic fatalities and serious injuries increased by 10 percent in the region. The rise in traffic crashes, fatalities, and serious injuries in Southeast Michigan is consistent with state and national trends.
