Shop with a Cop 2016 is a Wrap!

The WCSO takes particular pride in this program as it is an entirely staff generated initiative designed to provide children in need with an opportunity to shop for gifts for themselves and those whom they love. Selected by school social workers on the basis of demonstrated need, these are children who might not otherwise have had much of a holiday.

Shop Cop 2016Held for the past 14 years, the program gets better every year thanks to the big hearts of our donors and volunteers. This was truly an amazing year. The generosity of our donors allowed us to impact the lives of 196 children and help bring joy to them and their families. This year each child shopped at Meijer in Scio Township or Meijer in Belleville with an officer from Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, Ypsilanti City Police, Eastern Michigan University Police, University of Michigan Police, Northfield Township Police, or Chelsea Police Department with a volunteer from one of the following groups: University of Michigan Tri Delta or Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, Eastern Michigan Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority, EMU Cheer and Dance Team or Concordia Girls Cross Country Team.  Each child received the following:

  • $135 to spend on gifts for themselves and/or their family
  • Pizza dinner and dessert
  • Winter jacket, event T-shirt, winter hat, winter gloves, blanket, backpack, toothbrush, and toothpaste
  • Visit with Santa plus a letter from him addressed to each child specifically
  • Visit from Grimace from McDonalds
  • Visit from Colors the Clown
  • Visit from the Storm Trooper (Star Wars)
  • Got their face painted
  • Got to decorate their own cookies to take home
  • Stuffed their own animal
  • Stocking with their name on it
  • $20 Red Robin gift card plus free kids meal
  • $20 McDonalds gift card plus free kids meal
  • $10 Culvers gift card plus free adult & free kids meal
  • Free large pizza from Jet’s Dexter, Jet’s Chelsea, Marco’s in Whitmore Lake, Ollie’s Pizza or Domino’s Pizza depending on where each child lives
  • Each family received a $25 gas card

Your kindness and the happiness it brought to those 196 children and their families at “Shop with a Cop” 2016 is deeply appreciated by Sheriff Jerry Clayton, the coordinator Sgt. Keith Flores and the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office.
