WCSO Underwater Search and Recovery Team Assists in Special Olympics Fundraiser at the Big House

Comprised of highly trained and certified divers from multiple divisions’ within the Sheriff’s Office, the Underwater Search and Recovery Team (USRT) is responsible for water recovery operations within the County and is active in community in a variety of different capacities.

For the past 5 years the USRT has assisted with the University of Michigan Polar Plunge to raise money for the Special Olympics of Michigan.  This years’ event, which kicked off the partnership between the University of Michigan and the Special Olympics of Michigan, was held this past Saturday, February 22, 2014.  Even with temperatures in the 20’s our USRT member’s suit up and stand-by in the freezing cold water for hours to provide a safe “plunging” environment for hundreds of participants in the Big House.

As of Monday, the funds raised for the Special Olympics of Michigan totaled $131,403.00, which is about $6000 more than last year.
