A Day in the Life of a Deputy

Deputies responded to a fatal motor vehicle crash at M-52 and Bethel Church in Sharon Township on Thursday, February 27th, 2014. Corporal Mike Williams, lead investigator, with Corporals Steve Wallen, Jeff Saren and Tom Mercure did an outstanding job of managing and conducting the kind of detailed on-scene investigation required in such a matter.

2-27-14 Whiteout ConditionsThe scene was particularly challenging as a result of the extreme cold and hazardous winter conditions, including blowing snow that caused periodic white-out conditions severely diminishing visibility.  As a result of their efforts, no additional crashes or injuries occurred.

“I spent a great deal of my early career policing fatal and serious motor vehicle crashes.  As you might expect, these situations don’t often occur in ideal settings.  This looked like about as dangerous a scene as a responding Deputy Sheriff could face.  These were some of our senior staff and they worked effectively as a team with the poise and professionalism we expect of our Deputy Sheriffs.  They did an outstanding job of managing very difficult circumstances in assuring and maintaining scene safety.  Important to recognize are the 911 Emergency Communications Operators who guided them and provided crucial support while, at the same time, they addressed multiple other crashes throughout the county.  We are fortunate to have such outstanding professionals serving the county.
