WCSO shares SEMCOG’s regional update reference the increase in traffic crashes, fatalities and injuries with some tips on how to avoid crashes and reduce injuries.
Preliminary analysis by Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) shows that traffic crashes in the seven-county region (Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, St. Clair, Washtenaw, and Wayne Counties) have increased for the fourth consecutive year. Total traffic crashes increased by six percent in 2016, up from 138,710 crashes in 2015. Both traffic fatalities and serious injuries increased by 10 percent in the region. The rise in traffic crashes, fatalities, and serious injuries in Southeast Michigan is consistent with state and national trends.
The WCSO takes particular pride in this program as it is an entirely staff generated initiative designed to provide children in need with an opportunity to shop for gifts for themselves and those whom they love. Selected by school social workers on the basis of demonstrated need, these are children who might not otherwise have had much of a holiday.
