Sediment Removal Begins
August 23, 2006 - The first photo shows what the pond is looking like these days. The contractor is pumping water from the pond into the creek via filter bags. They are also cutting drainage trenches in the sediment to encourage drainage towards the outlet (photo). This will help to dry out the sediment.
Sediment removal is the main construction activity this week (and next, and next). The contractor is using the excavator to scoop the sediment into the rock truck (dump truck), which takes the sediment to the area that used to be the grassy field. The sediment is dumped, spread and allowed to dry (photo 2).
After a few days, a bulldozer moves the dried sediment into a pile and the loader fills the trucks, and it is hauled away to the landfill.
Reminder: I'll be leading a tour of the site at 5:15 tomorrow. We'll meet at the Birch Hollow entrance. Bring boots if it rains.
