Dewatering the Pond

August 8, 2006

Dewatering the PondDespite some rain and balmy weather, Dan's Excavating has made good progress at Mary Beth Doyle Park. A fence has been installed around the east, west and south of the construction area. Within the next week, the area north of the pond will be fenced off and cleared (Hykone / Sunnyside Park).

The attached photo shows that the pond has been dewatered. Malletts Creek is flowing across the background from left to right.

Within the next few days the Creek will be diverted into the temporary channel seen in the foreground. You can see a series of culverts in the channel to allow heavy equipment access to the pond. These culverts will be sufficient to convey Malletts Creek during typical flow. In the event of a storm, the water will rise to fill the channel.

The channel flows around the pond shoreline, along the right side of the photo, and rejoins Malletts Creek via the sheet pile structure in the background. (The sheet pile installation will conclude shortly. Sorry about the noise.)

Dredging will begin shortly after the diversion. Please email me if you notice foul air during the dredging and dewatering process. Also, expect increased truck traffic as sediment is removed from the site.

Later this month, expect reconstruction of the pond area. A series of pools will replace the large pond and an embankment will be built to permanently direct Malletts Creek into the new floodplain wetland located in the space previously occupied by the open field; between the hill and the pond, inside the pathway.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me. Thanks.
