Project Background

The April 2000 Malletts Creek Restoration Plan recommended reconstruction of the pond at Mary Beth Doyle Park (Brown Park) to improve habitat, reduce phosphorus pollution by 25% and continue to provide flood control.

Doyle Park is owned by the Malletts Creek Drainage District and is leased to the City of Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation Department. The park is used for active recreation by the surrounding neighborhoods and by the local disc golf community. The north end of the disc golf course is located in the floodplain of Doyle Park Pond -- the area where the redesign will take place.

The pond was constructed in 1977 to store water for flood control in heavy storms. It was not designed to address water quality issues.

In 2003-04, three public meetings were held to share information on the project’s objectives and to gather community feedback on design alternatives. Final Design (see below), was completed in 2005.

An informational discussion specifically for the disc golf community was held in March 7th, 2005 at Cobblestone Farm. Representatives from the Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation, and the Drain Commissioner’s office were on hand and presented plans for Brown and Bandemer. A public meeting specifically for the Brown Park renovation took place at the Mallets Creek Library on April 5th, 2005.

The official opening of Mary Beth Doyle Park is scheduled for June 1st, 2008. Temporary fencing around the interior of the park placed to protect the growing vegetation will remain in place until the end of June. On July 1st, control of the park will be transfered from Washtenaw County Drain Commision back to the Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation Department. Questions about disc golf and other recreational activites can be sent to the Parks and Recreation Department, by phone at 734-994-1913 or by e-mail.
