PSYCHOTROPIC MEDICATIONS
Used To Treat Mental Ilness
Type Trade Names Uses
Antidepressants Anafranil, Asendin, Celexa, Desyrel, Effexor, Elavil, Ludiomil, Luvox, Nardil, Norpramin, Pamelor, Paxil, Parnate, Prozac, Serzone, Sinequan, Surmontil, Tofranil, Vivactil, Wellbutrin, Zoloft Used to improve mood, energy level, sleep and reduce restlessness and anxiety for persons suffering from Bipolar (Manic Depressive ) Disorders, e.g. Panic Disorder, Agoraphobia, Obbessive-Compulsive Disorder, Post-tramatic Stress Disorder.
Mood Stabilizers Depakene, Depakote, Lamictal, Lithium (Eskalith, Lithobid, Lithonate, Lithostat, Lithotab), Neurontin, Tegretol Used to decrease severe mood swings, racing thoughts and manic behavior in persons with Bipolar (Manic Depressive) Disorders.
Psychostimulants Cylert, Desozyn, Dexedrine, Ritalin Used to treat hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention associated with Attention- Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.
Sedatives/Hypnotics Ambien, Dalmane, Doral, Halcion, Paxipam, ProSom, Restoril Used to relieve restlessness and improve sleep.
Antipsychotics Clozaril, Haldol, Loxitane, Mellaril, Moban, Navane, Orap, Prolixin, Risperdal, Serentil, Stelazine, Taractin, Thorazine, Trilafon Used to decrease delusions and hallucinations and to improve reality testing for persons diagnosed with Schizophrenia or Bipolar (Manic Depressive) Disorders. Also used to treat motor and vocal tics in Tourette's Disorder.
Anxiolytics Atarax, Ativan, BuSpar, Centrax, Klonopin, Librium, Serax, Tranxene, Valium, Xanax Used to lessen anxiety, reduce panic attacks and abnormal fears associated with Anxiety Disorders, e.g. Panic Disorders, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and generalized Anxiety Disorders.
