Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office
Sheriff's Advisory Council

Establishment of the Board:

The Sheriff’s Community Relations Advisory Board was first established in cooperation with the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners and the Sheriff's Office on May 1, 1991, in an effort to enhance community relations and provide the best possible police services to the citizens of Washtenaw County.  In 2006 the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners dissolved this board.  In 2007, Sheriff Minzey formed the Sheriff Advisory Council in order to keep the lines of communication open between the Sheriff's Office and the community.

Along with the current Sheriff, Dan Minzey, the Council consists of eleven (11) Washtenaw County citizens, including one County  Commissioner.

The purpose and objectives of the Advisory Council is:

  • To act as a liaison between the Sheriff and the surrounding communities.
  • To keep informed with respect to policies, programs, and conditions at the Sheriff's Office.
  • To make relevant information known to the community, and to encourage community interest and involvement in the Sheriff's Office.
  • To comment and make recommendations regarding the operations, policies and conditions at the Sheriff's Office.
  • To review incidents, investigations, complaints and policy issues brought to the Council by the Sheriff or any member of the Council and make recommendations to the Sheriff about the matter.
  • To take such other actions as may be appropriate to accomplish the objectives of the Council.

Board Officers and Elections:

The officers of the Sheriff's Advisory Council consists of a Chairperson and a Vice-Chair.

Their respective powers and duties include:

  • The Chair presides at all meetings and is the sole spokesperson when media contact is necessary, after consulting with the Sheriff or the Sheriff's designated representative.
  • The Vice-Chairperson(s) shall preside when the Chair of the Board is absent or otherwise unavailable.

The election of officers is held annually at the first meeting of the new calendar year. A nominating committee is appointed by the Chairperson on or before the last meeting of the year. Nominations for officers may also made from the floor.  Elections are decided by a majority of vote of those members present.  In the event of tie votes, re-balloting will take place.
