Smokefree Business

The Surgeon General, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the American Medical Association, and many other leading health authorities have concluded that exposure to environmental tobacco smoke(ETS) is a cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers. The EPA classified ETS as a Group A(known human) carcinogen, and estimated that ETS is responsible for 3,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the US among nonsmokers. Secondhand tobacco smoke also causes illness in infants and young children, including asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia and ear infections.

The Washtenaw County Clean Indoor Air Regulation prohibits smoking in public and private worksites and public places in Washtenaw County.  The regulation was established to protect individuals from exposure to secondhand smoke and was based on a variety of studies that indicate tobacco smoke including secondhand smoke is a major contributor to indoor air pollution and many preventable diseases such as cancer, heart disease, stroke and respiratory illnesses.  For additional information about the Washtenaw County Clean indoor Air Regulation click here or contact DeBorah Borden at (734) 544-6874.
