Health Care Coverage for Pregnant Women

Are you:

  • Pregnant,
  • Without health insurance,
  • Need health care, and
  • Cannot afford to pay for private health insurance?

If you answered "yes" to these questions, you may qualify for free or low-cost health care insurance (coverage) available to pregnant women.

HEALTHY KIDS/MEDICAID

For low-income children under age 19 and low-income pregnant women of any age.  Provides comprehensive medical, mental health, dental, and vision coverage.  Must be a Michigan resident.

PLAN FIRST

This program will enable the Michigan Department of Community Health (MDCH) to provide family planning services to women who otherwise would not have medical coverage for these services.

MOMS (MATERNITY OUTPATIENT MEDICAL SERVICES)

For low-income pregnant women who do not qualify for Healthy Kids/Medicaid (including teens who, because of confidentiality concerns choose not to apply for Healthy Kids/Medicaid).  Covers outpatient pregnancy-related services (prenatal; post-natal).

MOMS enrollees should also apply for Emergency Only Medicaid and Washtenaw Health Plan - "Plan B" (also see below).

EMERGENCY ONLY MEDICAID

For low-income children, elderly (age 65 or over), and pregnant women who do not qualify for Healthy Kids/Medicaid, MIChild, or full Medicaid.  Covers inpatient (hospital) labor and delivery services for pregnant women; covers "emergency" services for children and elderly.

Pregnant women with Emergency Only Medicaid should also apply for MOMS (see above) and  Washtenaw Health Plan - "Plan B" (also see below).  Children and elderly with Emergency Only Medicaid should also apply for Washtenaw Health Plan - "Plan B" (see below).

WASHTENAW HEALTH PLAN (WHP) - "PLAN B"

For low-income Washtenaw County residents without health insurance.  Provides coverage for primary care from WHP Primary Providers; diagnostic tests such as X-rays, laboratory tests and others; some pre-approved specialty care services; inpatient hospitalizations (in Washtenaw County only); Emergency Room services for "true emergencies"; limited number of prescription drugs (mostly generic drugs); limited outpatient mental health visits.  WHP Plan B generally does not cover pregnancy-related services!

Pregnant women with WHP Plan B should also apply for Emergency Only Medicaid and MOMS (see above).
