Washtenaw Influenza Activity

November 19, 2009:  Reports of lab-confirmed novel H1N1 cases (swine flu) and respiratory illness rates in schools decreased again for the week ending 11/14/09, but levels remain near peak of previous flu seasons. Unfortunately, the first death from H1N1 in a Washtenaw resident occurred this past week. The individual was an adult and did not have any significant underlying medical condition.

The majority of H1N1 cases continue to be diagnosed in persons under age 25 years, but all ages are being affected. See below for local influenza surveillance data, including hospitalizations by age groups.

Influenza Cases and Hospitalizations by Age Group (pdf).  The highest number of hospitalizations have been in 25 - 49 year olds, followed by 5 - 24 year olds and 50-64 year olds.  However,  0-4 year olds and 65+ are being hospitalized at a disproportionate rate to being diagnosed with influenza.
