Coalition for Infant Mortality Reduction
The Washtenaw County Coalition for Infant Mortality Reduction is made up of individuals and groups who are concerned about reducing infant mortality rates in our county. In particular, our goal is to reduce racial disparities in infant mortality and in low birth weight/premature delivery. To find out more about the coalition, email Ruth Kraut or call 734.544.3068.

Some of the projects on the Coalition's 2008 work plan include:
- Interconceptual Care Project: Program for women who, within the last year, had a pregnancy that ended with a miscarriage after 16 weeks, stillborn baby, infant death or low birth weight/preterm baby. Participants receive help accessing physical, mental, and dental health care—for free. For more information please see our brochure.
- Oral Health Task Force: The Washtenaw County Public Health Department, the Washtenaw Health Plan, and the Washtenaw County Coalition for Infant Mortality Reduction have formed an Oral Health Task Force to address issues and improve access to oral health care throughout Washtenaw County.
- Plan First/ Family Planning: The Coalition is working with Medical and Social Service providers to increase access to online enrollment for Plan First within Washtenaw County. The Coalition is also developing and implementing a Family Planning module for WIC members.
- Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS): 370 mothers who gave birth in 2007 will receive an in-depth survey that covers issues of safe sleep, family planning, breastfeeding and racial discrimination. This Washtenaw County PRAMS study will provide important maternal and child health data relevant to local infant mortality issues.
