Food Assistance Programs at Farmers Markets

 

SNAP/Bridge Card/EBT (Food Stamps)bridge card logo

Who is eligible: Income-qualified, determined by MI Dept. of Human Services (DHS).

How it works: Bring your SNAP Bridge Card to a main booth at the farmers market and a cashier will swipe it for the amount you designate, and give you wooden tokens for that market in that amount. Tokens don’t have to be spent the same day.

When it’s available: Anytime the farmers market is open.

Who is eligible: Anyone with a SNAP/EBT Bridge Card.

How it works: When you swipe your EBT card, you receive an equal dollar amount in metal tokens worth $2 each, up to $20 per market day. For example, if you spend $8 on your EBT card, you get $8 more in DUFB, or $16 total to spend at the market.

WIC Project FRESH

Who is eligible: WIC participants must contact the WIC office on or after June 3rd to sign up (first come, first serve).

How it works: Paper coupons are distributed at markets on specific dates/times with nutrition education. Use coupons with participating farmers for fresh MI produce.

When it’s available: Sign up June; coupons distributed July-Aug; expire Oct 31, 2013

Senior Project FRESH/Market FRESH

Who is eligible: Washtenaw County residents who are at least 60 years old and income-qualified (185% of poverty or less).

How it works: Paper coupons distributed by Washtenaw County Public Health. Use coupons with participating farmers for fresh MI produce, herbs and honey.

When it’s available: June 1, 2013 – October 31, 2013

Prescription for Health LogoPrescription for Health

Who is eligible: Patients with chronic disease or food access issues from Packard Health, Neighborhood Family Health Center or Faith in Action.

How it works: Patients enroll at their clinic and bring a “prescription” to the Downtown Ypsilanti, Depot Town, Chelsea Bushel Basket or Saturday Chelsea Farmers Markets to get wooden tokens to spend on fresh fruits and vegetables.

When it’s available: Sign up June; tokens at markets July; program runs all season.
