YMCA Ann Arbor Pioneers a Healthier Community
The Ann Arbor YMCA has been chosen to receive a Pioneering Healthier Communities grant! Hear from Diane Carr, Senior Program Director with the Ann Arbor YMCA, as she gives an update on this exciting opportunity:
As part of the YMCA Activate America national initiative, each year since 2004 several YMCA’s from across the country are chosen to convene a group of community leaders to serve on Pioneering Healthier Communities teams. The teams are committed to activating their community to increase healthy eating and active living opportunities for their residents. Each year, new teams are chosen via a competitive application process and come together to participate in the Annual YMCA Activate America: Pioneering Healthier Communities Conference, where they:
- learn from national experts about evidence-based strategies that build sustainable healthy communities (through changes in policy and the built environment)
- are provided tools to create these changes
- design game plans for change in their communities
During the second year, teams are eligible to receive funding to implement the strategies identified in their game plans. The Ann Arbor YMCA convened a team of 10 community leaders from Wastenaw County that attended the PHC conference December 5-7, 2007 in Washington, D.C. More information on the team's efforts will be coming in the next few months.
