Ypsi Residents Urged to Get Active!
There was something for everyone during “Get Active Ypsi Week,” May 15-20. Ypsilanti residents of all ages and abilities participated in walks, bike rides, and other opportunities for physical activity held all over town. The Ypsilanti Health Coalition sponsored the week and convened numerous community organizations and volunteers to host nearly 20 events including walks, bike rides, exercise classes, or how-to workshops throughout the week. Activities included historic, garden, and city parks walking tours; bike rides to familiarize riders to local routes; and a free entry evening at EMU’s recreation center.
“Physical activity is so critical to our physical and mental health,” says Debbie Young, Ypsilanti Health Coalition facilitator. “We wanted to partner with community organizations to provide many opportunities for physical activity and raise awareness of walking routes, bike routes, and recreation facilities. The response from community organizations, such as the Ypsilanti Jaycees and the Ypsilanti Heritage Foundation, was tremendous. It shows the diversity and commitment of people in this town to offering opportunities for people to be active.”
