Free Adult Abuse and Neglect Prevention Training for Long-Term Care Staff in Southeast Michigan
Beginning in April 2006, a free Adult Abuse & Neglect Prevention (AANP) training program will be offered to all medical and non-medical staff in Southeast Michigan who work with adults in long-term care settings. Any direct access staff, including nurses, nurses’ aides, housekeepers, janitorial staff, therapists and dietary staff are invited to attend the training.
The 8-hour training session will address the issue of elder abuse from a patient-centered perspective. Participants will learn to help prevent the abuse and neglect of vulnerable adults by leaning to identify abusive environments, diffuse abusive situations, identify personal stress triggers that may lead to abuse, and create a culture of understanding and respect for elderly patients in their workplace.
The training is part of a state-wide pilot program funded by the Centers of Medicare & Medicaid Services and sponsored by the Michigan Department of Community Health, Michigan State University and BEAM. The training sessions will begin in April 2006 and run through March 2007.
Participants can receive continuing education credits and nurse contact hours for completing the training. For more information, contact Simone Brennan, Project Coordinator for AANP, by e-mail at sbrennan@mibeam.org or by phone at (517) 703-9346.
