Walking Map Becomes Community Meeting Spot

Next time you’re in Chelsea, look for the new wall map mounted to the side of Chelsea Market on Main Street. The map is an enlarged replica of the walking maps created by the Healthy Communities coalition with Washtenaw Steps Up funding. Thanks to additional funding from the Chelsea Community Foundation and enthusiastic support from the Chelsea Market, visitors to Chelsea can identify walking routes starting from the market as well as amenities such as water fountains, restrooms and benches and destinations such as the Chelsea Community Hospital, post office, wellness center, parks and schools. The idea of the wall sign came from the Chelsea advisory group created to assess and identify policy and environmental changes appropriate for the city. The maps compliment the Healthy Communities Walking Initiative, now in its third year. “The goal was to get people moving and exercising, as well as create a safe atmosphere for them to succeed in their health initiative. With the maps available, people will feel more comfortable and safe exercising outside in their community,” says Becky Pazkowski, director of marketing and development for Chelsea Community Hospital.
