National:  Massachusetts Measure Would Create Statewide Safe Routes to School Initiative, May 31, 2007, Massachusetts lawmakers heard testimony this week on a measure that would direct federal Safe Routes to Schools funding to local community groups and schools that organize student walking and biking programs.

National:  Strong Evidence Links Soft Drink Consumption to Obesity, Diabetes, Health Behavior News Service, March 6, 2007. The case against swigging soda just got stronger. A large systematic review reveals clear associations between consumption of nondiet soft drinks and increased calorie intake and body weight.

Local: Every Week (and more!) at YPS – Ypsilanti Public Schools, March 9, 2007.  Contest winners announced. Chartwells, the food service provider for Ypsilanti Public Schools, announced the winners of the “Be a Voice for Balanced Choice” contest and they are: Courtney McCoy, a sophomore at Ypsilanti High School and Tahne English, a seventh grader at East Middle School. Both students received a $25 gift card to Target and their entry forms have been submitted for consideration in the national competition, which is a $500 prize. Students were asked to explain the benefits of improved eating habits, how they have expanded their knowledge of nutrition and what they are doing to maintain an active lifestyle.

Local: It's only alcohol': District confronts problem, The Saline Reporter, March 1, 2007.  Local athletes kicked off teams, ski club members caught drinking. The drug of choice among Saline High School students is not cocaine. It's not heroine or marijuana. It's alcohol.

National:  Exercised Legislators Defend Recess, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Feb. 9, 2007.  A bill recently introduced in the Washington Legislature, would require that all public schools in the state provide K-12 students with an hour of physical activity each day.

National:  School Meals Deserve Strong Public Support, The Billings Gazette, Feb. 11, 2007.  Dayle Hayes, Co-chair of the Montana Team, submitted a guest opinion article to inform the public about pending state legislation that will allocate funds to Montana schools to purchase equipment that will assist their food service departments with providing quality school meals.  

National: Where’s the Fruit?: Fruit Content of the Most Highly-Advertised Children’s Food and Beverages. Where’s the Fruit?, conducted by staff from Prevention Institute, documents that despite advertising and packaging that boldly suggest the presence of fruit, over half (51 percent) of these children’s food products contain no fruit at all!
