Critical Incident Stress Management

Critical incident stress management (CISM) is a short-term psychological helping process that focuses solely on an immediate and identifiable problem. In Washtenaw County, there are two teams that use CISM principles to assist people dealing with traumatic events.

  • The CISM team is comprised of first responders (people whose job it is to respond to traumatic incidents on a regular basis).
  • TERN stands for Traumatic Events Response Network. The TERN team is a group of trained, mostly volunteer human services and mental health professionals. TERN provides early crisis intervention services to traumatized people or groups in community settings (neighborhoods, schools, work places, etc.) throughout Washtenaw County.

To request a CISM or TERN response, call Washtenaw Metro Dispatch at 734-994-2911. The operator will contact the on-call person and have them call you back.
