Gardening Resources
We all know that spring weather in Michigan is unpredictable and this year is no different. However, for area gardeners the cool spring weather so far, with warm days in between, has been very good for getting community gardens under way. School, community, neighborhood and backyard gardens are starting to pop up everywhere and a new community gardening effort in Saline will get under way on May 20.
Growing Hope is an organization that helps train groups that want to plan and implement gardens through their Community and School Garden Development Institute. Project Grow also provides garden education programming and provides garden areas where individuals can rent a garden plot. Both of these organizations are excellent county resources for the novice gardener wanting to get a good start with some guidance. Of course, the MSU Extension Master Gardener Program helps those interested in expanding their knowledge and interest in gardening through an extensive educational curriculum. Look on the MSUE website for dates and times of upcoming programs!
No matter what your level of expertise or past experience, getting started in community gardening is fun, something all ages can do, provides you with some extra vegetables or fruit for your pleasure and is a great way to spend time in the great outdoors!
