September is National Preparedness Month
Take time to prepare and protect your health.
National Preparedness Month is a great time to check your level of preparedness. Take a few minutes to update your plans or supplies. There are a variety of resources to help.
American Public Health Association (APHA) - Get Ready Campaign
APHA's Get Ready campaign helps Americans prepare themselves, their families and their communities for all disasters and hazards, including pandemic flu, infectious disease, natural disasters and other emergencies. Visit http://www.getreadyforflu.org/newsite.htm.
Do 1 Thing
Do 1 Thing is a 12-month program that makes it easy for you to prepare yourself, your family, and your community for emergencies or disasters. Visit http://do1thing.com/.
Michigan Prepares - National Preparedness Month Recipe Challenge
The Michigan Department of Community Health, Office of Public Health Preparedness is sponsoring a preparedness kit recipe challenge. Throughout September, you can submit recipes for dishes using ingredients one would find in an emergency food supply kit - that is, items that are shelf-stable for at least a year and do not require cooking or refrigeration. There are two categories to submit recipes for: no cook and grill style. Winners will receive a gift card from Amazon.com for up to $100. Winning entries will be announced in October. In addition, winning recipes will be featured in mini-cooking segment videos on the MDCH YouTube page and in a preparedness kit e-cookbook that will be released later this year. Recipes can be submitted through September 30, 2013. Visit www.michigan.gov/prepares.
Emergency preparedness guidance from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, lists and explains specific threats and responses. Includes information for multiple audiences. Available in Spanish. Visit http://www.ready.gov/. Check out ready.gov/kids for more tips and information on family preparedness.
