Domestic violence occurs during pregnancy (approximately 6% of pregnant women are abused). Abuse often gets worse during pregnancy and contributes to poor outcomes for both mom and baby. Bleeding during the first and second trimesters is significantly higher in women who are abused. Domestic violence survivors may also experience low weight gain, anemia, and infections during pregnancy. Abuse during pregnancy can harm the baby and result in preterm labor.
