Safer Sleep Practices
In Washtenaw County, more infants die of poor sleep environments than any other cause, except for prematurity and birth defects. To reduce the risk of death from unsafe sleep practices, babies should be put to sleep on their backs. A baby should sleep in a safety-approved crib with a firm mattress and tight-fitting sheet in a smoke-free environment. Babies should never sleep in an adult bed or on a sofa. Be sure your baby is not overdressed for sleep.
NEW! The Washtenaw Area Council for Children (WACC) has a Safer Sleep DVD and PowerPoint. You can watch the PowerPoint as a slide show or view as a PDF (without death scene reenactments). Call WACC at 734.434.4215 for a copy of the DVD, PowerPoint, Safer Sleep materials or a free presentation.
