Student Placements and Projects

The Washtenaw County Health Services Departments, Public Health and Mental Health, need students to assist with various projects. At the same time, Public Health and Mental Health offer student internships and volunteer opportunities. The departments accept interns in various ways. Please read below for more clarification and review the opportunities at the bottom of the page.

PUBLIC HEALTH OPPORTUNITIES:

  • Public Health Epidemiology Internship Opportunities:  One position is offered every summer for a graduate student in epidemiology. The internship application process is coordinated through the Office of Public Health Practice at the U of M School of Public Health. The internship lasts from 8 – 12 weeks and a stipend is offered. The internship for 2008 is filled.
  • Social Work Student Opportunities: UM School of Social Work students are matched with the Public Health Department based on the description the PH Department submits. Students should inquire at the SSW Placement Office.
  • Public Health Student Opportunities: The Public Health Department will submit paperwork describing the internship slot. The SPH sends the Department a list of candidates with their resumes and cover letters. The Department will review the resumes, decide on potential candidates and interview those chosen.
  • The Health Promotion / Disease Prevention Division usually has one paid summer intern per year that works full time between May – August and often this intern gets a summer stipend and also credit for some graduate school coursework (MPH, MSW).We also place interns who need to fulfill credit requirements for the School of Social Work (year long interns) and Public Health is in contact with the internship office at the UM SSW to identify interns looking for this placement. This is unpaid. If we have grant projects that have paid opportunities for short term projects, we identify students in need of these kinds of placements usually through the UM School of Public Health or UM School of Social Work.

  • Maternal and Infant Health program works through the University of Michigan's School of Social Work liaison.

  • Eastern Michigan University - Please contact your academic advisor.
