Justice Project Outreach Team (J-PORT)
The Justice Project Outreach Team (J-PORT) is a Washtenaw County Program that provides supports to individuals who are involved with the justice system and need mental health assistance, both in the jail and in the community.

Alternative to the often adversarial approach of a courtroom. Specializes in divorce and custody mediation but other services may be available. This may provide cheaper, alternative means to end disputes. Please call for details.

Dispute Resolution Center
Non-profit, volunteer-based community organization, partly funded by the Michigan State Court Administrative Office (SCAO). They are one of twenty-five SCAO-funded centers in Michigan that offer low cost mediation services as an alternative to court. They help individuals, businesses and organizations in Washtenaw County peacefully resolve conflicts in such areas as: Landlord/Tenant disputes, Neighbor/Neighbor disputes, Family disputes, Work Place disputes, Consumer/Business & Business/Business disputes, and School Issues.

Operated by the State Bar of Michigan, this may be a good place to start if you want to find a lawyer. Many arrange low cost or free consultations of approximately 15 to 30 minutes as part of the initial service.

Private non-profit organization that provides free legal advice and representation to low-income persons and senior citizens (regardless of income) in certain civil legal cases. LSSM uses federal income eligibility limits (125% of federal poverty level) to determine income eligibility. Some limited waivers are permitted.

Washtenaw County Bar Association
The Washtenaw County Bar Association operates a Lawyer Referral and Information Service (LRIS) as a service to the community. The LRIS maintains a list of attorneys by their particular areas of practice who are willing to consult for 30 minutes with a person who nees legal advice. There is a charge of $30 for a referral, and payment is due at the time of the referral. Payment goes toward the cost of administering the program. Participating lawyers make no further charge for the initial half hour consultation.
