EPA Brownfields Assessment Demonstration Pilot Grant
In April of 2001 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded Washtenaw County with a $200,000 Brownfields Assessment Pilot Grant. Over the past 3 years Washtenaw County used this grant to conduct eleven Phase I and nine Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, as well as one Baseline Environmental Assessment. To date, 38 potential brownfield sites, suspected to be contaminated have been identified for redevelopment have been compiled in an inventory. This inventory was mainly generated through the support of local units of government, developers and private parties. In order to leverage the $200,000 allotted, the Washtenaw County Redevelopment Authority (WCBRA) asks potential developers and communities to cost share for the Phase II ESA. Because we were able to leverage the EPA dollars the grant was extended for 2 years, brining the total to three and a half years ending in August 2005.
