Initial News Release
The Washtenaw County Wind Project will be undertaking an investment grade
wind study for 12-18 months, beginning this spring. Project planners have
been working since last summer to develop working relationships and strategy
to make sure that the project is effective. While there is a good deal of
information available on wind speeds at 10 - 50 meters, there is little
verified information on wind speeds at the hub height of the newest larger
wind turbines, 70-100 meters. It has been shown in other parts of the
Midwest that the wind speed at the higher altitudes is much greater than
originally thought. Our project anticipates that by conducting this study,
we will be able to demonstrate bankable data that will attract investors and
allow local entrepreneurs to confidently develop local wind turbines for
electrical generation to help reduce the need for fossil fuel power plants.
