The Historic Resource Database (HistWeb) contains survey information, photos, and sketches of properties more than fifty years old gathered over the last twenty-two years.
Adobe Acrobat Viewer (or a similar product) is required to view the PDF files used in the HistWeb application. Most people already have this software. If you do not, Adobe Acrobat Viewer is free and available for download by clicking on the Adobe graphic.
This is a federally funded project made possible by a partnership between the Washtenaw County Historic District Commission (WCHDC) and the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO).
Please be aware that:
- This site is a compilation of surveys of historic resources from a specific time period. Therefore, changes have inevitably occurred, and we ask for your help in making corrections or additions to the information presented. We will update the site as new documentation becomes available. Please Contact Us with documentation for corrections and updates. (Click Contact Us for link).
- The information is current through June 2003 but the aerial photos were taken in April 2002.
- Most sites depicted herein are private property and are not open to the public. The owners have been generous in sharing their knowledge and property histories, and their privacy should be respected.
- The majority of the surveys were conducted by students and graduates of the Eastern Michigan University Historic Preservation Program.
- Resource information varies in the amount of detail available. Some resources may have been missed during the surveying process.
- HistWeb is a compilation of surveys located outside city and village limits but within Washtenaw County. Many resources are located in rural townships that are currently experiencing rapid growth and losing their rural landscape.
- There will be an opportunity for you to sort through the database using 19 pre-selected fields.
- When a property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, State Register, or is a Washtenaw County Historic District, a link will be provided for more information. Remember that these links will take you to an entirely new site.
- Adobe Acrobat Reader is needed to view the images. To obtain this free software please visit this site. Click here to download the latest version of Adobe Reader. Scanned images have been saved as Adobe PDF files and JPG files. Barn surveys saved as PDF files may need to be rotated for easier viewing.
- This is phase one of a three-step process to be proactive in protecting our precious historic resources by designating them as Washtenaw County Historic Districts.
