The Washtenaw County and City of Ann Arbor Green Map Project

Washtenaw County & Ann Arbor have joined other areas around the world that have created green maps of attractions or interests in the area that promote sustainability efforts. Unfortunately, the map will no longer be updated as of January, 2003. Please keep in mind the information available may not be the most current if you choose to use this map.

This project is a component of the Green Map System (www.greenmap.org), an international effort in cities all over the world to inform the public and expand environmental, social and cultural services. The main objective of the project is to begin to raise awareness and inform our citizens as to some of the services and attractions that communities in the county share. We hope that by highlighting some of these special places, more of our citizens will understand our many interdependent environmental, social and economic systems and help them to further research the options they have to live in a sustainable way. We began this project by inviting nominations of and compiling information about possible sites to include in this map. Nominations were open to geographical locations of sustainable interest, nonprofit organizations, government programs, private businesses, volunteer groups, and natural areas. Nominees must somehow promote one or more of the following: public health, environmental quality, economic prosperity, equity, resource conservation, energy conservation, community, civic engagement, population management, international responsibility, or education.

The Washtenaw County Green Map project is a collaboration of several contributing groups, the City of Ann Arbor, Michigan Manufacturing Technology Center, Recycle Ann Arbor, students of the University of Michigan, Washtenaw County Department of Planning and Environment.

The nominated sites were located on city & county maps by the students in Dr. John Nystuen's 1999 GIS class at the University of Michigan. Z. Asligul Gocmen (Teaching Assistant), Tidasiri Bhatrakarn, Diana Farina, Julia M. Smith & James Wallmann.

With the first printing of the map complete, the project has entered a new dimension. After the printed version was complete, a student from the GIS class, Julia Smith, continued with the project as a special studies.  She transformed the paper copy into an interactive electronic version.  We are proud to announce that the Washtenaw County and City of Ann Arbor Green Map is now available for viewing on the World Wide Web.
