Energy Conscious: Washtenaw County Installs a 10 KW Photovoltaic Panel to Save Money, Energy and to Reduce Pollution

Funded by a grant received from the State of Michigan Energy Office, Washtenaw County has chosen to invest in Solar Photovoltaics (PV). Electricity generated from this system, will help to reduce the amount of electricity that the county normally has to purchase from their utility. In addition, the use of solar energy is better for the environment and contributes to Washtenaw County’s long history of promoting sustainable and green building. The installation also offers the County valuable educational opportunities to help its residents become more award of renewable energy.

Photovoltaic panels are comprised of two layers of a special blend of silicon that interact with one another to create an electrical field within the panel. These panels are then protected on each side by buffer barriers and a glass shield. As sunlight shines on the panes, the electrons in the electrical field begin to move (electricity). The panel harnesses the electricity which is then used to help power an office building in the County [705 N. Zeeb Road, Ann Arbor, MI 48103].

The Solar PV system is expected to generate 3-5% of the building’s total annual energy use. This will result in an annual savings of approximately $1,000 to $1,500 for the county each year, and reduction of 16,000-24,000 pounds of carbon dioxide. The county may also be able to sell the electricity it produces in the form of “ Green Tags" and generate an additional $500-$1,000 per year.

The use of solar energy will benefit Washtenaw County residents in several ways. Money saved by the county on energy costs will result in tax dollars that are available to be spent elsewhere in the county. The installation will also provide educational opportunities to residents and schools; using a real-life solar installation which can enhance the teaching of environmental and energy issues in both science and social studies courses.

In the front lobby of the building at 705 N. Zeeb Road, there will be an internal display installed.  The display will give a description of the photovoltaic project including a computer screen that will display real time data from the system such as energy production and money saved by the device.  In addition, the display will house brochures and a Solar PV sample.

For more information about the project or to set up a tour, please contact Washtenaw County’s Energy Coordinator, Josh Long at longj@ewashtenaw.org or call 734-222-3939.
