Pharmaceutical Take-Back Program: Effective starting July 15th, 2008 at select pharmacies throughout Washtenaw County!  Click here for more details.

County Clean-up Days a recent success!  The County recently held two clean-up days on May 3rd in the City of Chelsea and May 17th in the City of Saline.  The events frequented approximately 800 and 300 cars respectively.  Thank you to everyone who participated!  Please stay tuned for future clean-up day information, to take place in the fall.

City of Ann Arbor Cuts Bulky Waste Pick-up: In response to budget concerns, the City of Ann Arbor no longer provides a for-fee service to collect furniture, appliances, computers, surplus bags of trash and other bulky wastes.  Residents may take their bulky wastes to the Washtenaw County Drop-Off Station, operated by Recycle Ann Arbor.  Residents can also contact private haulers and area reuse operations to help dispose of unwanted bulky wastes.  The Turning Trash to Treasure guide found on this website provides information on alternate disposal methods.

Residential Recycling

General Information and Publications:

  • Ann Arbor Drop-off Station: Open to all county residents.  Recycle Ann Arbor operates Washtenaw County's most comprehensive regional Drop-off Station (DOS).  The DOS is a fully staffed facility open six days a week year-round.  The facility is funded through a partnership between Washtenaw County, City of Ann Arbor and Pittsfield Township.

  • Green Info Guide: The online version of the Green Info Guide, a tool that provides practical information about local solid waste and recycling services as well as information on best management practices concerning household hazardous waste, yard waste, and energy efficiency.

  • Washtenaw County Recycle Guide: Contains information on, and locations of, local recycling opportunities.

  • Turning Trash to Treasure: Find out how to get rid of hard-to-dispose-of household items, such as appliances, motor oil, antifreeze, computers, furniture and more.

Specific Reuse, Recycling, and Disposal Information: 

  • Ash Tree Disposal:  The State of Michigan offers two locations in Washtenaw County where you can drop off ash wood free of charge:  Mid-Michigan Recycling on Platt Road, and LaMont Brothers on Whitmore Lake Road.  The facilities recycle the ash wood while preventing the spread of the beetle.

  • Computer Recycling: Learn about the environmental and public health issues related to disposing computer as well as recycling options available to county residents.

  • Electronic Waste Recycling:  Locations for recycling electronics other than computers, such as cell phones and iPods.

Business Recycling

If your business would like assistance in starting a recycling program, please give the Solid Waste Program a call at (734) 222-3827.  Our staff is happy to work with organizations to improve recycling and waste reduction rates.  By starting a recycling program you may also qualify for Waste Knot Program Partnership.

Washtenaw County 3-R Business Directory: The Washtenaw County 3-R Business Directory is a listing of local businesses and organizations that make use of sustainable practices. The directory is organized by business type and area.  business recycling

Waste Knot Program: Provides community-wide recognition and organization-based technical assistance and education to businesses, schools, governmental agencies and non-profit organizations that demonstrate leadership in waste reduction and recycling to protect our environment and to improve their bottom line.

Environmental Excellence Awards Program: The Environmental Excellence Awards Program aims to recognize businesses and non-profit organizations in Washtenaw County that practice environmentally sound behavior in the areas of water quality protection, waste reduction and recycling, and pollution prevention.  The awards are provided once year.

Solid Waste Management & Planning

The Washtenaw County Solid Waste Management System consists of collection, transfer, processing and disposal facilities. The network of system facilities are utilized to support “enhanced waste prevention, reduction, and recycling, composting and sanitary landfill service."

Residential Solid Waste Profile & Assessment Report (2005):  The report is based on an assessment of solid waste managements systems at the local and county level.  The report  intended to stimulate discussions of the findings and recommendations and to assist local units of government develop residential solid waste systems that are convenient and cost-effective, are sustainable, promote waste reduction and recycling and reduce impacts to the environment and public health.

Solid Waste Chapter: This chapter of " A Comprehensive Plan for Washtenaw County" is based on the information collected for the Solid Waste Management Plan and other research materials.  It reveals current trends, issues and opportunities for which the recommendations for future action are based. 

Solid Waste Management Plan: The main purpose of the Solid Waste Management Plan Update ("the Plan") is to protect public health, assure adequate disposal capacity for all waste generated within County borders, and to establish goals for waste prevention and recycling.WCCSWM

Washtenaw County Consortium of Solid Waste Management (WCCSWM): The WCCSWM was established in 1991 to foster communication and collaboration between local governments and public agencies on solid waste and recycling issues.  Membership is voluntary and limited to local units of government and public agencies.
