Sustainable Business Practices

Black & Veatch provides full engineering, procurement and construction services to the power, infrastructure and process markets. The Ann Arbor office started its recycling efforts informally almost 10 years ago by donating scrap paper to schools. The office was enthusiastic about the idea and soon partnered with Recycle Ann Arbor’s Commercial Recycling Program. Each week Black & Veatch recycles approximately 6 cubic yards of quality white bond paper. To reward employee participation, office wide luncheon parties are held to celebrate their efforts and accomplishments. The office has strong waste reduction practices including document scan and a computer filing system that eliminates the need for paper copies. The company also participates in the “The Funding Factory” toner cartridge-recycling program and donates their accumulated points to a local Ann Arbor school. Additionally, when the company upgrades to new computers, all the old computers and monitors are lease recovery recycled. Black & Veatch is also concerned with energy conservation – they buy ENERGY STAR rated office equipment, place external lights on timers, perform routine maintenance on major equipment, install variable air volume systems and use night setbacks when building is unoccupied.
