Congratulations to the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Department on receiving two prestigious awards in recent months.

Staebler AwardIn March, WCPARC received the Barn of the Year Award from the Michigan Barn Preservation Network for the rehabilitation of the historic loafing barn at Staebler Farm.  The Michigan Barn Preservation Network is an organization committed to the rehabilitation of barns for agricultural, commercial, residential and public uses.  In 2008-09, the 130+ year old loafing barn underwent significant repairs and restoration as part of a larger project preserving the farm complex.  Work included replacing hand-hewn beams and posts, pouring a new foundation, and replacing rotten wall boards.  A fresh coat of red and white paint finished the project.  The park, which is not yet open to the public, is located on Plymouth road in Superior Township.

Eastern Michigan University AwardOn April 14, 2011, Robert Tetens, the Director of the Parks and Recreation Department, was one of five individuals honored to receive the 2011 Eastern Michigan University’s Presidential Award for Community Partnerships. The award was presented at the 2011 EMU Night of Recognition by EMU President Susan Martin, who noted Bob’s career of public service and “visionary” leadership with the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission.  The Presidential Awards recognize individuals and organizations for their contributions to the community and to the preservation and growth of university resources.
