Winter Solstice Hike
(December 18th, 2016; 3pm-5pm)
Enjoy a beautiful winter hike from prairie to lakeshore as the sun sets and the winter season begins.  In this season of rest, we will look for signs of animal life.  Shawn Severance leads this hike. This program is FREE, but vehicle entry fee is required.  Email for more details.  (Eligible for Junior Naturalist)

Wild Skull Mystery (January 21st, 2017; 10:30am-12pm)
Have you ever found an animal skull while hiking? Have you ever wondered how to tell which animal it belongs to? Join Naturalist Kelsey Bolda to learn how to identify various skulls based on shape, teeth, and other defining characteristics. This event is FREE, but vehicle entry fee is required.  Email for more details.  (Eligible for Junior Naturalist)

Kids' Ice Fishing Seminar (January 21st; 10:00am-TBD)
One hour fishing demonstration by Frabill/Plan staff and then ice fishing with staff.  Guarding are REQUIRED.    Please bring your own equipment if possible.  Space is limited.   This program is FREE, but vehicle admission is required.  Register at, and contact with any questions.

Snow Shoe Clinic (January 22nd, 2017; 2pm-4pm)
REI joins WCPARC to offer this introductory clinic to snowshoeing.  This event will begin with a presentation on how to use the equipment, followed by a snowshoe nature hike led by a WCPARC naturalist.  REI can provide snowshoes to adults that do not have any.  This event is FREE, but vehicle entry fee is required.  Contact for pre-registration (required) or for more information.  Click here for the registration form.

Outdoor Board Game Olympics (Saturday, January 28th, 2017; 10am-2pm) 
Looking for a fun and family-friendly way to combat the winter blues?  Join us for our Outdoor Board Game Olympics, coinciding with Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation’s Winter Fun Fest.  The Olympics will have you competing in a life-size board game competition & indoor board games, along with fun crafts, a scavenger hunt, and a hot cocoa tasting! Cost is $5/person or $18/family of 4 and $2 per additional member.  Registration can be found online or can be done by sending in the registration form.  Email for more details.

Snowflake Splendor (February 4th, 2017; 2pm-4pm)
Discover the wonder of snowflakes. Learn about the types of snowflakes, why they form, and make a snowflake catcher! Kelsey Bolda will be leading this program.   Email  This program is FREE, but vehicle entry fee  is required.  (Eligible for Junior Naturalist)

12th Annual Ice Fishing Derby (Saturday, February 11th, 2017; 7am-5pm)
Join us for a fun-filled day of competition and prizes! Catch Northern Pike, Blue Gill, Bass and Crappie. Gift cards and other prizes for winners of the “Longest Northern Pike” & “Longest Pan fish”. Bring your own bait. No alcohol, ATV’s or snowmobiles.  Cost is as follows: Pre-registration- $10 for adults, $5 for kids 12 and under, Event Day Registration- $15 for adults, $10 for kids 12 and under. Registration fee includes lunch. Registration can be found online or by sending in the registration form.  Email for more details.

Night Owls (February 25th, 2017; 8pm-8pm)
Learn all about owls, dissect an owl pellet, and then go out for a hike in the park after dark to call for owls.  (No live owls at this program, unless some decide to fly down and check us out when we are hiking and calling).  This hike led by Shawn Severance.  Pre-registration is required at  This event is FREE, but vehicle entry fee is required.  Email for more details.  (Eligible for Junior Naturalist)

Family Campout (Saturday, September 9th- Sunday, September 10th, 2017; Times TBD)
Are you looking for a great opportunity to spend a night out under the stars with your family? Join us for the Independence Lake County Park Family Campout! You'll enjoy fun activities like zany crafts, relaxing fishing at the dock, intriguing nature programs, delicious s'mores, a sizzling campfire and a scrumptious pancake breakfast! You won't want to miss out on this spectacular event. Cost is $8/person.

The Scarecrow Mystery Dash (Saturday, October 7th, 2017; 10am - 2pm)
Looking for a little mystery this fall? Come to Independence Lake County Park and visit Scarecrow Lane, where you can solve a mystery, and enjoy family friendly activities! Activities include: building your own scarecrow, participating in crafts, conquering the Halloween obstacle course, competing in a spider toss, and enjoying delicious cider & doughnuts. You won’t want to miss out on this WCPARC original event!
