Robert Domeier, M.D., trained in emergency medicine at Detroit Receiving Hospital, completing his residency in 1987. During his residency, he gained experience in EMS by working as a flight physician with the Detroit Medical Center Skyteam, an aeromedical helicopter program based at Detroit Receiving Hospital. After residency, he joined the faculty of St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. His interest in EMS grew and he became the medical director of the Washtenaw/Livingston Medical Control Authority. He continued to fly with Midwest Medflight based at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, becoming the medical director for this service in 1996.

Dr. Domeier’s interest in EMS research began with a project using specially trained paramedics to improve the care of patients during interfacility transport. The Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) paramedic program, which was implemented in 1990, has become the standard for the state of Michigan. Dr. Domeier has continued to do EMS clinically based research looking at EMS indications for spine immobilization, Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI) training programs, cardiac arrest care and EMS pain management. This research has led to improvements in patient care protocols and has given our providers better evaluation and treatment tools.
