Maximizing Capabilities if You're Blind or Visually Impaired
In September 2006 Roberta McCall,
Michigan Commission for the Blind Vision Rehabilitation Specialist, offered
a 6-part workshop: Maximizing Capabilities if You're
Blind or Visually Impaired. She was assisted by Lisa
Marchione, CVRT, and Leela Kausch, RT intern.
Each session included tips, resources and information to assist individuals who are blind or have low vision on how to deal with a variety of daily living tasks.
Sessions were on Thursdays from
10:30 AM-Noon:
September 21, 2006: "What Every Low Vision
Patient Should Know" Topics include high and low tech
magnifying devices; importance of lighting and glare control; using color
and contrast; aspects of low vision exams; and much more.
September 28, 2006: "Transportation and Mobility Options" Topics include para-transit; volunteers and paid drivers; local taxi services; orientation and mobility training; and using dogs and canes.
October 5, 2006: "Labeling" How to label clothing, canned goods and more.
October 12, 2006: "Adaptive Kitchen Skills" Learn about devices that make cooking safer and easier if you are blind or have low vision.
October 19, 2006: "Money, Time & Handwriting" Examines various adaptive devices for handling money, managing time and handwriting.
October 26, 2006: "The Whirlpool of Information" Techniques and resources for obtaining, saving, retrieving and controlling information.
