Events and Programs: LBPD Book Lovers Club

Book Lovers Club LogoThis program is open to all LBPD consumers and guests of consumers.  Participants enjoy lively discussion about selected books during sessions held at LBPD, prompting new friendships and support.  Sessions are held four times a year.  Each session lasts four hours.  Two titles are usually selected per session (one Fiction, one Non-Fiction title).  Participants are encouraged to read the selected titles, although it is not necessary.  Light refreshments are served.  Contact LBPD to recieve copies of the book(s) in advance.

A Long Way Home (RC 63512) by Ishmael Beah
The author recalls his experiences as a war refugee and as a 13-year-old soldier forced to join the Sierra Leone army.  Beah describes participation in mass slaughters, his rehabilitation, immigration to America, and involvement in UNICEF.  Violence, strong language, and some descriptions of sex.  2007.  Narrated by Dominic Hoffman.  2 cassettes.

National Book Award winner studies two generations of Pilgrims, from the original 102 passengers who arrived in 1620 to the handful of survivors of the 1675 King Philip's War.  Describes the initial storm-tossed voyage, starvation and disease in the wilderness, and the help-and duplicity-of the natives.  Some violence.  Bestseller.  2006.  Narrated by Ted Stoddard.  4 cassettes.
