The Master Gardener program is a volunteer leader training program made up of people who are enthusiatic about gardening, who want to learn more about growing plants, and who are willing to share their knowledge with others. This program brings students up-to-date on new horticultural information and gardening methods, reinforces previous knowledge and helps them learn how to disseminate this information in the best way. In its simplest form, a Master Gardener is a volunteer trained by the Extension Service to help others learn more about gardening and basic plant science.
Classes are offered once a year to Washtenaw County residents, usually beginning in January, and lasting for about twelve weeks. To become certified, Master Gardeners are also required to complete 40 volunteer hours. These volunteer hours are educational in nature, that is, the emphasis is that the Master Gardener will share their knowledge with others.
Informational meetings are held in mid-November to explain the program in depth and to answer questions. Attendance at an informational meeting is required to receive an application to the program. To sign up for future informational meetings call 734-997-1678 before October 15.
