Master Composting i. Chris -Certified 8 new master composters @ November 9th event ii. Wayne Appleyard gave tour of the premises at Leslie Science Center. Learned that worm composting is a very difficult task. In the composting toilets, it has produced some fruit fly problems. Also, a common problem for composting toilets is aphids! iii. There is a video located on the Master Composter Facebook page that has a leaf-mulching demo. Very helpful information to see! Taped by CTN. b. Pharmaceutical Take-Back i. Jeff -Washtenaw County Solid Waste (along with Lenewee and Jackson Counties) has signed the contract for the Clean Sweet Grant from the USEPA! The program will accept commercial pesticides/herbicides @ Zeeb Rd HHW facility. This will include Hg. Currently we are looking at design/construction plan which will expand the facility and may allow us to incorporate a Pharm Take-Back. This grant will save the County $10,000/yr on pesticide/herbicide disposal costs. ii. The County must record/keep records of that which they receive. The Hazardous Household Waste contractor will identify/properly log all materials received. This is a bit more labor intensive than the current practices. iii. Jeff -We want to expand the program to veterinary practices, since 75% of all antibiotics are from agricultural field. iv. The County’s goal is to expand the program, and hopefully by 2012, narcotics will be acceptable. c. E-Waste i. Jeff – Michigan Recycling Coalition (MRC) had a recent event which covered issues regarding E-Waste. 3 ii. Some businesses are being paid by the city to take their electronics back; Some may be penalized for NOT returning. iii. Best Buy MUST accept any electronics for recycling (because they are a manufacturer.) iv. Look at page 13 of Ann Arbor City’s most recent (Fall 2010)Waste Watcher for where to call for E-Waste Take Back. 6. Legislative Updates a. Nothing to report. 7. Local Community Updates a. Chris – This is the 2nd year for the City of Ypsi to not have curbside leaf collection. This year has gone much more smoothly compared to last year. Success! i. Potential Reasons: Community members are more informed and more educated about mulching b. Jeff – CTN’s “The Green Room” started this past spring. Some topics that have recently been featured are: County’s weatherization, Hg Spills, Fragmites. You can view these videos on CTN’s website. Barbara Lucas is the interviewer. c. Dan – HHW has concluded for 2010, and resumes April 2011. Annual Report to come. HHW Contract with EQ is expiring May 2011, so County will put out for bid again this spring. d.
