The Problems with Single-Use Plastic Carryout Bags in Washtenaw County

UPDATE:  Due to the passage of Public Act 389 of 2016, Washtenaw County is not currently seeking to adopt or implement a carryout bag ordinance. We will be working in the future to partner with companies who wish to reduce or phase out their single-use plastic carryout bags.

In Washtenaw County, MI, the proliferation of single-use plastic carryout bags has been linked to negative impacts in three key areas: the Local Recycling EconomyHealthy Environment and Sustainable Community-building.

WASHTENAW COUNTY ADOPTS CARRYOUT BAG ORDINANCE

On June 1, 2016, the Washtenaw County Board of Commissioners voted to adopt Michigan's very first Carryout Bag Ordinance. The policy currently calls for a $.10 eco-fee for each disposable bag distributed at a retail grocery establishment. The policy is effective beginning Earth Day 2017 (April 22). To learn more about what this means, please view Approved Resolution and Carryout Bag Ordinance.
NOTE: The approved Resolution makes reference to Senate Bill 0853.
